NEW PANTHEON

After 2016, I felt so despairing and helpless about the situation of the United States (and the world) that it seemed only miracles and deities could remedy things. In response I began working on New Pantheon, a series of hybrid gods born to confront the world’s challenges. I use collage or traditional Byzantine and Russian Prosopone iconology techniques in egg tempera to depict these new heroes in worldly intercession. Highlighting issues of consumption and dispossession, I sometimes incorporate construction debris, cardboard, and found objects from the street.

New Pantheon is further developed with performative rituals, costumes, prayer cards, votive figurines, and processional banners used in parades and other activations.
